The 5-Fold Ministry Gifts have been one of the most misunderstood areas of Scripture in the entire Bible. They are God’s empowering to the Church. Their purpose is simple, to perfect / mature the saints who are for the work of the ministry. There is no indication any where in the Bible that any one of the 5 is any less or more important than the others. Yet, when we look at the church that is not what we see. Each of the 5 gifts to the Church have a specific Anointing, all with the goal of preparing the saints for ministry. The Bible indicates that they are a team and that all are to be at work toward the same goal. It was for this reason that all 5 were given.
What we see now, however, in the church (no capitol C intended) is a distortion of God’s intention for the 5-fold. The Apostles and Prophets are supposed to be the foundation layers, (I Cor 3:10, Eph 2:20) receiving Revelation from God concerning how to build. The Teachers are supposed to be the ones who teach the saints to apply what the Apostles and Prophets receive from the Lord. The Evangelists are to exhort and encourage the saints to evangelize. Finally the Pastors are to give general guidance to the saints; helping them develop the fruit of the Spirit. Instead we see most churches built on either the foundation provided by a denominational outline or a single person setting an organizational plan in motion; usually his own. In the case of the latter, that single person usually appoints himself and calls himself “pastor”. (Actually, that person may not even have the gifting of pastor.) (Jesus said that it is upon the Rock of Revelation that He will build His Church not from a manual.)
In the Anatomy of the Body of Christ, each group (some call them churches) is a cell designed and “programmed” (through God’s Spiritual genetics) to become a particular part. That is why building upon Revelation from the Holy Spirit is so vital in building the Body. When Revealed Word is followed, each part can grow in to the part of the Body God designed it to be. When a pre-designated plan is used, instead of fresh Revelation, we could end up with too many fingers, toes etc; a grotesque body as we see now.
